The 56 Group Wales was founded in 1956 by a number of professional artists who realised that there were very few opportunities to exhibit contemporary art in Wales at that time. Since then the Group has consistently shown contemporary work throughout Wales, in the British Isles and Ireland, in Europe and North America. Its membership, which is restricted to 22 artists, has included many nationally and internationally recognised artists which has enabled the Group to make a major contribution to the establishment of contemporary art in Wales and to its recognition abroad.

Sefydlwyd Grwp 56 Cymru ym 1956 gan nifer o artistiaid proffesiynol a sylweddolai mai ychydig o gyfloedd yn unig oedd ar gael i arddangos celfyddyd gyfoes yng Nghymru. Ers hynny mae'r Grwp wedi arddangos gwaith cyfoes yn gyson trwy Gymru, gweddill yr Ynysoedd Prydeinig ac Iwerdon, yn Ewrop a Gogledd yr Amerig. Mae ei aelodaeth, a gyfyngir i 22 0 artistiaid, wedi cynnwys nifer o artistiaid a gydnabyddir yn genedlaethol a thramor sydd wedi galluogi'r Grwp i wmeud cyfranaid mawr i sefydlu celfyddyd gyfoes yng Nghymru ac I'w gydnabyddaieth dramor.
