Glyn Jones
" I am interested in exploring the way in which the process of painting, symbols and abstraction can be used to convey and interpret experience. A kind of non verbal communication which creates a sensation which may strike a chord deep within me and hopefully within those who take enough time to absorb the work. My interest in Celtic ornamentation, the art and crafts of india, North Africa and the countries of the Far East, together with the particular sensations experienced when I have travelled in them, all contribute directly or indirectly to my work. I usually work on a painting over a long period during which the deliberate application of various images, marks and techniques create many chance relationships between colour and form. I enjoy improvising within ever expanding parameters. I see this process of improvisation as similar to that used by many composers and musicians, particularly in jazz and the music of India. These preoccupations are synthesised through the painting process to fix an image and create a sensation that , for me, needs no further alteration. Glyn Jones was born in the Rhondda Valley, South Wales and first studied painting at Cardiff College of Art (UWIC) where he was awarded the Silver Medal. He continued his studies at the Slade School of Fine Art, London, where after graduating he was awarded a postgraduate studentship. He returned to Wales in 1972 as Head of the School of Fine Art at Cardiff. In 1994 his work received a commendation at the 7th International exhibition of Contemporary Art in Libramont, Belgium. Also that year the University awarded him the title of Professor. In 1999 he represented Wales at 'Euro Celtic Art, Salon d'Art Contemporain des Pays Celtes, Lorient, France. He has been a recipient of an Arts Council of Wales major artist award and a prize winner at the Television South West/South West Arts National Exhibition. He has exhibited widely in Europe, North America and the UK and has had solo exhibitions in Cardiff, London, Winchester Cathedral and New York. His work has been acquired for many private and public collections including the Arts Council of Wales, the Contemporary Art Society for Wales, the Universities of Swansea and Cork, the City of Cardiff, the Glynn Vivian Gallery and Museum, Swansea, the National Museum and Galleries of Wales and the National Gallery of Slovakia. He now paints fulltime in his studio in Taffs Well near Cardiff.
