Martyn Jones
"My work is descriptive in essence - natural shape and form taken from the world at large. My paintings have been described as capturing a natural ambiguity, but that ambiguity should not be construed as being manufactured in any way. Within each image an open invitation is challengely presented to the percipient. It is difficult to determine when a painting is finished, but usually I instinctively know when that moment has arrived. I can say more often than not, my paintings finish themselves." Martyn Jones gained a 1st Class B.A.Hons. degree in Fine Art at UWIC. before completing the M.A. course at Chelsea School of Art, London. He was then awarded a Junior Fellowship at Bath Academy of Art. His work is represented in numerous institutional and private collections in the UK, Europe and the USA. Martyn has gained a number of national painting awards which include the 'Artscribe Award', Windsor and Newton Award' and the 2000 Arts Purchase Prize. In 2002/03 his work was included in 'A Propos Ceri Richards', an exhibition of nine contemporary Welsh artists selected by Mike Tooby at the National Museum and Gallery, Cardiff. During the period of 2003-05 his work has been seen and well received in five exhibitions in New York, which includes, 'In Situ', Showroom at 42nd Street,'Group Exhibition' at The White Box Gallery Chelsea, Solo - Show at the Wales International Centre, Chrysler Building, Two-man show at the Venezuelan Consulate Gallery, Fifth Ave. and in 'Summer View 2005, at the Robert Steele Gallery, Chelsea, Manhattan.
